Slate Range, Goler and Butte Valley 12/29 - 30/09
What was to be a few days in Butte
Valley solo was cut short when I became a little bit ill and felt it prudent to
curtail activities and then to leave, putting off peaks and hidden treasures for
another trip. Still it was a nice time, going over the Slate Range and up Goler,
over Mengle Pass to Butte Valley. I also got from home to Butte Valley in under
6 hours! I snagged Stella Anderson’s old cabin, which I cleaned up a bit but
still had a few mice friends to keep me company. Though it was very cold up
there, the stove at Stella’s works wonderfully and the cabin was very pleasant!
Checked out the usual stuff and the Butte, relaxed in and around the cabin.
On the way out Goler I stopped at the remains of the Barker Ranch (burned in
early 2009), some side canyons and then headed out via the Windgate Road. The
trip will be redone at a later date to hit the missed objectives, or at least
some of them! It was the last trip out and about for 2009, the first trip since
doing the truck's timing belt and a long list of other maintenance and a great
way to end the year in the back country of Death Valley National Park!
